Top 5 fitness trends in 2020

As 2019 comes to a close, another exciting, fitness-filled year emerges. We’ve partnered up with audio fitness app Auro, who have written a guest blog for us. Here are the top 5 fitness trends in 2020 predicted by Auro:

Audio Fitness

Over the last few years, we’ve seen the popularity of audiobooks and podcasts take a substantial rise. The ease of hearing and listening is particularly important when exercising. The Auro app is based around audio-powered workouts and being able to have a virtual personal trainer at your fingertips.

By sculpting workouts around audio and making video secondary, it enables users to understand what they need to do without having to squint at their phone screen constantly. It also means if you work out at the gym, you don’t have to leave your phone in direct view for a 6’4 bodybuilder to trample on!

Wearable Technology

Wearable technology has seen a skyrocketing take-off with the likes of smartwatches and heart rate monitors coming in all different shapes and sizes. They’re getting more intelligent, more advanced and even more sleek and stylish. The functional additions of a step count and calorie tracking makes wearable technology all the more desirable for not only the fitness fanatics but also beginners.

In January 2020, Auro will also be jumping on this top fitness trend by launching wearable integration within their app. You will be able to pair with your smartwatch or heart rate monitor and track your progress in real-time throughout the duration of your workout. They have constructed their HIIT workouts based around EPOC Theory (Excess Post-exercise Oxygen Consumption), whereby you are inclined to put in 90% effort for at least 15-20% of your workout (for instance 5 minutes of a 30-minute session). This means you will continue to burn calories even after the session and would not need to spend hours and hours at the gym.

Excess Post-exercise Oxygen Consumption (EPOC) refers to the rate in which calories are burned after a workout. If you work your body at the right intensity, your body will work harder to recover the oxygen lost during the exercise and will still burn calories after you have completed your workout.

HIIT Training

Following nicely on from trend number 2, is High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT). HIIT is particularly good for people who are busy but want to feel the burn quick. It’s also one of the most effective ways to burn calories fast!

Researchers found that HIIT burned 25-30% more calories than other forms of exercise (Source: National Institutes of Health). However, it’s got its drawbacks and isn’t the most suitable form of exercise for beginners. So if you’re starting out your fitness journey, ease into HIIT.

Group Training

It’s always more fun with friends ey? There are many benefits of working out with a friend and in groups. You can teach each other new ways of working out, from new techniques to different exercises. You can also encourage and motivate one another to get up and go and keep on going.

Auro are also launching the first ever virtual run club, alongside leading fitness retailer Wiggle. The Wiggle Run Club is a 6-week program delivered by Auro’s expert personal trainers, with each week focusing on a different area of your running. Focuses include; Breathing, Posture, Pace, HIIT and Endurance.

Bodyweight Training

Most people associate strength with how much you can lift yet the reality is, bodyweight training is exceptional for both building muscle alongside mind and body control. Think of a gymnast or a free runner, their ability to lift their own bodyweight and control their strength is unbelievable.

One form of bodyweight exercise on the rise for 2020 fitness trends is callisthenics. Callisthenics consists of a variety of movements, focusing on lifting your own bodyweight and utilising gravity. The great benefit of training without equipment is that you can literally train anywhere you like, all you need is yourself!

These 5 fitness trends should hopefully set you on track to stay on top form in 2020. Take care when working out and most importantly, listen to your body… and if you need that extra push or an audio personal trainer in your ear to guide you through your workout, download the Auro app and get started with your 14-day free trial today.
